چکیده

This work presents a method to handle walking on rough terrain using inverse dynamics control and information from a stereo vision system. The ideal trajectories for the center of mass and the next position of the feet are given by a pattern generator. Then, an inverse dynamics control scheme relying on a quadratic programming optimization solver is used to let each foot go from its initial to its final position, controlling also the center of mass and the waist. A 3D model reconstruction of the ground is obtained through the robot cameras located on its head as a stereo vision pair. The model allows the system to know the ground structure where the swinging foot is going to step on. Thus, contact points can be handled to adapt the foot position to the ground conditions.

Dynamics modeling and stable gait planning of a quadruped robot in walking over uneven terrains

Quadruped robots have unique capabilities for motion over uneven natural environments. This article presents a stable gait for a quadruped robot in such motions and discusses the inverse-dynamics control scheme to follow the planned gait. First, an explicit dynamics model will be developed using a novel constraint elimination method for an 18-DOF quadruped robot. Thereafter, an inverse-dynamics...

Optimization-based Full Body Control for the DARPA Robotics Challenge

We describe our full body humanoid control approach developed for the simulation phase of the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), and the modifications made for the DRC Trials. We worked with the Boston Dynamics Atlas robot, which has 28 hydraulic actuators. Our approach was initially targeted at walking, and consisted of two levels of optimization, a high level trajectory optimizer that reasons ab...

Robust Policies via Meshing for Metastable Rough Terrain Walking

In this paper, we present and verify methods for developing robust, high-level policies for metastable (i.e., rarely falling) rough-terrain robot walking. We focus on simultaneously addressing the important, real-world challenges of (1) use of a tractable mesh, to avoid the curse of dimensionality and (2) maintaining near-optimal performance that is robust to uncertainties. Toward our first goa...

Stereo-vision-based navigation of a six-legged walking robot in unknown rough terrain

This paper presents a visual navigation algorithm for the six-legged walking robot DLR Crawler in rough terrain. The algorithm is based on stereo images from which depth images are computed using the SemiGlobal Matching (SGM) method. Further, a visual odometry is calculated along with an error measure. Pose estimates are obtained by fusing inertial data with relative leg odometry and visual odo...

Linear reactive control for efficient 2D and 3D bipedal walking over rough terrain

The kinematics of human walking are largely driven by passive dynamics, but adaptation to varying terrain conditions and responses to perturbations require some form of active control. The basis for this control is often thought to take the form of entrainment between a neural oscillator (i.e., a central pattern generator and/or distributed counterparts) and the mechanical system. Here we use t...
